Romero: “modders are screwing up the industry” May 5, 2006

John RomeroJohn Romero recently took some time to post his thoughts about the Oblivion re-rating fiasco on his blog. Rather than scold the ESRB for taking into account the result of a mod, Romero has gone after the modders responsible for the “topless hack.” The one-time co-founder of id Software issued some strong words about the modding community, stating on his blog, “modders are now screwing up the industry they”re supposed to be helping.” Romero fears that developers will be forced to employ greater encryption methods to avoid re-rating incidents that hurt sales and reputations. In turn, greater security will close the door on open source game modding. Ongoing, public projects like CounterStrike will become history lessons. Seemingly harmless mods will become major lawsuits. Is the industry headed for dark days? [Thanks, Justin; via GameDaily BIZ]

F.E.A.R. expansion announced, TimeGate to develop

F.E.A.R.Sierra Entertainment has announced that Extraction Point, the first F.E.A.R. expansion, is in the works and will be released for the PC this fall. TimeGate (Axis & Allies, Kohan) is handling the development, including the story concept. However, according to Vivendi (Sierra”s parent company), Monolith is working closely with the studio to ensure that the expansion maintains the integrity of the original game. Monolith, now owned by Warner Bros., is working on its own sequel to F.E.A.R. and would do well to steer TimeGate in the right direction, as the expansion will likely tie the first and second games together. Monolith is also working with Vivendi to release the v1.5 patch, which will enhance F.E.A.R.”s multiplayer. Note: whether or not the expansion content will make it into the Xbox 360 port of F.E.A.R. has not been revealed.

How do ads in games benefit gamers?

Joystiq reader “Pickypants” asked a great question earlier this morning in our post about Microsoft”s acquisition of Massive Inc.

He asked, “how — specifically in games — will ads give a benefit to the end user?”

First, just to get this out of the way: we know that ads can be evil. We”ll be the first to slam anyone that clumsily inserts advertisements into a game in such a way that it hurts the in-game experience. That”s a given! But let”s move past the issue by assuming for a moment that advertisers, developers and publishers are aware of gamer alarm over the prospect of in-game ads. These parties know that they”d be hurting their businesses if they were to bludgeon gamers with ads because the resultant backlash would dampen game sales.

Context laid, let”s answer the question:

In sum, ads can be beneficial. They can also be horrible and stupid and offputting. We”re optimistic that the people working on the advertising in games business are smart enough not to shoot this nascent business model in the foot. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Penalty for being the worst raid leader ever? 50 DKP MINUS! [update 1]

In the NSFW video that follows, a raid leader flips out ninja-style as his team of 40 raiders fails to kill the dragon known to World of Warcraft players as Onyxia. For those who”ve never raided Onyxia, you need to know that this multi-phase fight is laden with traps and tricks, and usually takes hours upon hours of failed attempts before a group finally downs her for the first time. An experienced raid team can finish the encounter in 20 minutes.

The video that you”re about to see captures the frustration of the Onyxia experience, showing just how emotional things can get when total party wipe follows total party wipe.

It also highlights the hilarity that results when people with very little management experience are given the opportunity to lead a large group of people. Some soar, some flop. Our protagonist in the following video flops like a pancake.

Click here to watch. Turn the sound down (or put on some headphones), because the raid leader loves to drop the F-bomb.

[Update 1: Fixed autoplay issue.]

Microsoft’s Massive acquisition now official

Last week”s news that Microsoft would be acquiring video game advertising firm Massive Inc. for between $200 and $400 million was confirmed by Microsoft on Thursday.

According to a Microsoft press release, Massive”s technology for inserting advertising into games will be integrated across Microsoft properties including games on MSN and games played within MSN Messenger. (It”s a given that certain Windows games will continue to incorporate the technology, depending on whether the developers and publishers of those games wish to incorporate it.)

Approximately 60% of Xbox 360s are connected to Microsoft”s Xbox Live service. If that connection ratio stays constant even as the number of Xbox 360s sold increases, Microsoft will be able to promise advertisers the ability to deliver ads to millions (if not tens of millions, depending on how Microsoft fares versus the PS3 and Wii) of net-connected console gamers.

AT-ST walker from LEGO Star Wars II: The Original TrilogyLEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy will be out this fall when it releases with the unaltered original trilogy DVDs on September 12th. Sure, the limited-edition double dipping on the theatrical version of the films may rile movie collectors, but fans do want Han shooting first on their Star Wars DVDs. (The “theatrical” release will only be available until December 31st.) The simultaneous release of game and film on DVD follows in the tradition of the Star Wars Battlefront games releasing alongside the special-edition release of the original trilogy as well as the retail launch of Episode III. The special-edition versions will also be included on each two-disc set. [Thanks, Spindash54, Phil Theobald, Princess Zelda, John, & Jonathan] See also:

No Diablo at E3

“Twas a nice dream while it lasted. Despite an advertisement that hinted at coverage of Diablo 3 and this year”s E3 2006, IGN has gone on the record to telling us otherwise. The perpetrator is a “gap in communication” between IGN staffers, and in fact they went so far as to give an official word from Blizzard: “The developer is focusing all of their energy towards promotion of the first World of Warcraft expansion … and will save any announcements they may or may not have planned for a later date.” Make no mistake, there is a 110% chance Blizzard is developing — or at least contemplating and designing — a sequel to the mega-ultra-smash hit Diablo 2 (itself a sequel to the mega-ultra-smash hit original Diablo) … it”s a guaranteed seller. However, for now we will just have to wait.

Bethesda responds to Oblivion rating change

Oblivion (Mature)Bethesda has issued an official statement addressing the ESRB”s decision to change Oblivion”s rating from Teen to Mature. The developer will not contest the change, but insists that a “full, accurate, and comprehensive” report of Oblivion”s content was submitted to the ESRB before the game”s release. That report included a 60-page document that detailed all “explicit language, acts, and scenes in the game.” Bethesda”s report did not list nudity because “[there] is no nudity in Oblivion without a third party modification.” The existence of topless heroines is not a result of unlockable content, but rather, a result of third party tools used to modify the game”s art archive. With that said, it”s difficult to justify the ESRB”s decision to include “nudity” as part of the PC version”s explicit content. Bethesda also confirms that there will not be a recall, nor will the game”s content be changed in order to retain the Teen rating. Instead, future copies will be printed with Mature rating labels, and M-rated stickers will be applied to all existing unsold copies of Oblivion. Note: Both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of Oblivion have been re-rated.

Pre-E3: MMO roundup [update 6]

Massively multiplayer online games, known by a series of acronyms beginning with MMO, are a rising trend among developers. With monthly fees meaning regular income, and a player base too addicted to stop, developers trip over themselves to enter this lucrative market. We can guarantee we”ll be seeing a lot of MMOs at E3, so that”s why we”re bringing you this comprehensive overview of every MMO we currently know to be in development — excluding expansions of existing MMOs. Here”s a quick summary of the trends that we see emerging from this list:
  • East meets West.  Ten out of the thirty-five games listed are Korean MMOs hoping to make it in America and Europe, with several companies banking on the success of such a translation.
  • Elves and Orcs. Despite a number of fantasy-themed MMOs, there are several under development that have no sign of the fantastic about them — instead, we see themes from sci-fi to pirates.
  • Microtransactions. Pay for currency, don”t pay for the game — this increasingly common strategy allows gamers to try games for free. Those who become heavy players end up pouring in more cash than they would have paid for an all-you-can-play monthly subscription.
  • Casual MMOs. Three of the titles listed below are trying to break into the casual space, with appealing cutesy graphics and Flash-based play. Most casual titles aren”t persistent, though games like Runescape have done well out of the browser-based market so far.
  • New developers.  Fifteen of the studios below are working on their first MMO, or their first game altogether. This could mean increased innovation, or more problems — MMOs are risky business.

However, there are some challenges many of the companies listed below will need to overcome to make their products succeed:

9 Dragons

Adellion

Age of Conan

Aion

All Points Bulletin (APB)

Archlord

Atriarch

Bang! Howdy

Bioware”s Untitled MMORPG

BOTS

The Chronicles of Spellborn

Crusade

Dark and Light

Darkfall Online

Dark World Online

Untitled DC Comics MMO

Dofus Arena

Dungeon Runners

Endless Saga

Exanimus

Exteel

Fallen Earth

Fury

Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising

Hello Kitty Online World

Hero”s Journey

Huxley

The Lord of the Rings Online

Untitled Marvel MMO

Naughty America: The Game

Phantasy Star Universe

Pirates of the Burning Sea

Pirates of the Caribbean Online

PlaneShift

Project Wiki

Roma Victor

Soccer Fury

Soul of the Ultimate Nation

Space Cowboy Online

Square Enix”s Untitled MMORPG

Stargate Worlds

Star Trek Online

Tabula Rasa

Trials of Ascension

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

Warhammer Online

Honourable mention goes to the expansions we”re hoping to see at E3, which include World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade and a new chapter of Guild Wars. Also, Egyptian MMO A Tale in the Desert is about to start a second beta for its Tale 3 expansion. Sony Online Entertainment will also be showing EverQuest II“s third expansion Echoes of Faydwer, and its third adventure pack The Fallen Dynasty. With over 40 products jostling for buyers” attention, the MMO landscape certainly looks interesting — if crowded — in the near future. [Update 1 - added Hello Kitty Online World. Thanks, Deekman] [Update 2 - added Exanimus. Thanks, 007craft] [Update 3 - added Bang! Howdy and A Tale in the Desert III (as expansion); clarified Fallen Earth beta. Thanks Lonin, wormbin and jbrandt.] [Update 4 - added Hero”s Journey, Trials of Ascension, Adellion, Atriarch, Aion, Soccer Fury, PlaneShift, APB, untitled Bioware MMO; updated Square Enix project and added SOE expansions. Thanks, Severius, Ethan, Stephen, DaBlade, Tux, dejitaru. Whew!] [Update 5 - added Marvel & DC Comics MMOs, removed Untold Legends Dark Kingdom, updated ArchLord with beta link. Thanks, toga] [Update 6 - added Dark World Online and Fury. Thanks, Feral] Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
